Will F1 ever see a driver win the title this early in a season again?

Michael Schumacher won the 2002 title on July 21 after 11/17 rounds

czechfog183635d ago

No. 2002 was under the old points system where only the top six drivers got points and the winner got 10. I prefer the current points system.

david.comerford75d ago

For the good of the sport, I hope not. Although I do wonder what would happen if Verstappen climbed into the Mercedes (and they sorted out their reliability)

ahambly2376d ago

Surely not, right? I still feel like the season has *only just* started at this point in the season.

How would PRIME Michael Schumacher stack up against the current grid?

tyler.rowlinson85d ago

Verstappen is the only driver that stop Schumacher from dominating. Maybe Hamilton and Alonso in their prime could battle him, but they’re not there anymore

masternoah5785d ago

Really vague question to argue. If he went right now, in his current age, he’d be last. If it was his prime vs current drivers’ prime, I reckon 2nd or 3rd. He was beaten by Alonso, and LH beat Alonso, so my ranking would be LH, MV, MS, FA. But this is all speculative and car generation has a big impact.

aaditya.krishnamurthy85d ago

I think he'd have no competition in terms of ability (I don't think this is Hamilton's prime, even though he's still great) outside of maybe Verstappen. But that question can only be answered based on what team he'd be driving for!

Which F1 car would you love to take for a spin at Goodwood's Festival of Speed?

czechfog183635d ago

1966 Brabham Repco BT20. 1967 Eagle Weslake T1G. 1968 Lotus 49 Cosworth DFV.

wilsonjimwilson86d ago

There's a Lightning McQueen car at Goodwood this weekend and it will be a terrible tragedy if Liam doesn't get to drive Lightning McQueen.

nathanrogersfooball86d ago

That Benetton B195 from 1995. Made me fall in love with F1

If Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso were in equal machinery for their entire F1 careers, who would have been better?

czechfog183635d ago

The young Lewis Hamilton got inside Alonso's head quickly. That changed everything.

♥ 1

macblackadder9391d ago

That rivalry just wouldn't die out.

♥ 2

pete.bullen107d ago

There is a reason Lewis has stayed with top teams, won more races, is higher paid and respected. Whilst they are both great drivers Lewis delivers off the track whereas Fernando is one of the most disruptive people to ever get in a race car. After what he did at Mclaren the other teams know he's neither trustworthy nor a team player.

Which FOUR F1 figures - past or present - would you invite to your dream dinner party? 🍽️

czechfog183635d ago

Juan Manuel Fangio, Jim Clark, Stirling Moss, and Jackie Stewart.

rebecca.braybrook124d ago

This is such a tough question! I think I'd invite Jackie Stewart, Ross Brawn, Stirling Moss and Susie Wolff! I reckon that would make for a very interesting dinner!

ahambly23124d ago

I would love to get Michael Schumacher's take on F1 at the moment. I'd also add Niki Lauda for his experience of racing in the 70s, Lewis Hamilton for his unfiltered thoughts on 2021, and finally Adrian Newey for a lesson in aerodynamics.

How would Jenson Button fare in today's Formula 1?

dancoombs123d ago

It very much depends on what kind or car you give him…

ahambly23125d ago

I think his smooth driving style would have suited the ground-effect cars. I can't imagine he'd be competing for titles again though.

david.comerford125d ago

He's obviously not on the level of Verstappen, but he could his own against Norris, Leclerc, Russell etc

Which F1 driver is most likely to beat Max Verstappen's record?

Verstappen has won the most races consecutively (10)

venusarden3126d ago

Antonelli should go back to school to grow up

david.comerford126d ago

Arguably Verstappen himself, if he joins Mercedes

♥ 1

tyler.rowlinson127d ago

Verstappen's streak could be one that will never be beaten. But I'd back Antonelli to be the one to do it, maybe not this year, but in the near future

Which F1 driver was treated too harshly?

czechfog183635d ago

I believe that Mick Schumacher got a bit of a raw deal.

♥ 1

aaditya.krishnamurthy137d ago

I think Schumacher had to carry a weight of expectation no one else had to just because of his last name. He did well for what he was supposed to.

♥ 1

rebecca.braybrook137d ago

I think Mick Schumacher was definitely treated too harsly! There was far too much pressure to match the performance of his dad in a badly performing Haas!

Pick the greatest F1 season EVER

1961 Stirling moss era

aaditya.krishnamurthy139d ago

I’m biased because the 2021 season really made me a big fan, but I’m sorry we’ll never get a battle like that ever again

david.comerford139d ago

In terms of what I've seen, very tough between 2012 and 2021. I'll go 2012 just because it wasn't tarnished by controversy

What F1 driver do you think had the best farewell Grand Prix performance?

ahambly23142d ago

Obviously it wasn't it final race in F1, but Lewis Hamilton's farewell performance for Mercedes at the 2024 Abu Dhabi GP was brilliant. That last lap overtake to assert his authority over George Russell was *chefs kiss*

♥ 1

kyle.archer142d ago

Nico Rosberg's final race will take some beating! He beat Lewis Hamilton to win the 2016 F1 title before announcing his immediate retirement, after three gruelling seasons fighting for the title as Mercedes teammates, having gone into the season finale with thoughts about retiring already in his mind.

If one new manufacturer joined F1 tomorrow, which would be the most successful within 5 years—and why?

Great question. It feels like nearly everyone has either been in it or considered it at some point. I think Callum came up with the best answer. Hyundai would be interesting.

Final time 💪 Who is the F1 GOAT, Michael Schumacher or Ayrton Senna?

fogclimber1998141d ago

Ayrton Senna for me. I have been following F1 since the start of the 1963 season. Jim Clark was the one who just amazed me at every race back then. I have seen so many great drivers, but Senna will forever remain in my mind. Just superb.

Prime Max Verstappen and prime Lewis Hamilton. Equal car, one lap. Who's faster?

And what's the gap?

fogclimber1998141d ago

I prefer Lewis, but I expect Max to wreck him first.

beansytoast145d ago

Max. He's not had the same run of dominant cars, minus 23, and has been more consistent in threatening in equal or worse cars. Would be interesting tho.

jonny160d ago

Impossible to say but Hamilton was untouchable for years. Verstappen however hasn’t had the fastest car for a season or two now yet until recently was always dragging it toward a podium

What is your favourite Turkish Grand Prix memory as F1 returns to Istanbul Park from 2027?

chillout162d ago

ahambly23164d ago

Hamilton's drive on the 'inter-slicks' in 2020 was a sight to behold. It was a fitting way to secure his seventh world title, and further cemented him as one of the best drivers ever in tricky conditions.

Different generations they are both brilliant although Schumacher did resort to driving his rivals off track on more than one occasion to win titles

ad.crazy.20163d ago

And so has max on more than one occasion. You only have to look at last year or year before when he rammed Norris cause he couldn't pass him so he took him out.

Who is the greater driver Max Verstappen or Michael Schumacher?

matth162d ago

@dav.daddy ‘His first championship’ That one hasn’t been chatted about for a while. The one where they decided the whole championship by putting one driver on old hard tyres against another on brand new softs, for a lap.

dav.daddy163d ago

You've got to be kidding me? This can't be a serious question. Schumacher dominated over in different cars and rulesets. The only knock against him was he got caught cheating a time or two. Max had a good run when the cars rewarded his banzai driving style. The officials handing him his first title evens out Shumi's rule breaking so it's not even close.

♥ 2

fmcgvo66163d ago

Max is the man! But he has not reached Schumacher yet If he stays with Red Bull and F1 fix this mess they got the drivers in well max has the best chance of getting 8 championships

Which F1 great is most at risk from losing their achievement to a team's current driver?

tyler.rowlinson165d ago

Alpine will surely get a multiple Grand Prix winner at some point. I also wonder if Senna's McLaren wins will be beaten, maybe Norris if he stays?

aaditya.krishnamurthy166d ago

With Gasly's form this season, and under the right circumstances, I can see him toppling Ocon's record as a race winner for Alpine. But a lot has to go his way for that!

ahambly23166d ago

If Alpine are able to maximise their package in the coming years, then I can't see why one of their driver duo would be able to score a couple of wins!

Who's the greater F1 driver, Alain Prost or Ayrton Senna?

Senna was 2 seconds quicker than Damon Hill in Brazil 94. Incredible lap in the crapwagon A spec Williams. Watch the opening laps of Canada 93 and you will see a master at work

Depends how you define greatness - Senna had style and was great for the sport. Prost was more calculating - he arguably achieved more (and is still around today).

Which F1 driver - past or present - has achieved the highest peak?

martin.filipovic0166d ago

I agree with Palmer. All these Lewis and Max glazers always seem to exclude the car from the picture. Everything said in these comments so far a respective team peaks not drivers. Max's peak wasnt in '23. It was in that s***box of a Torro Rosso that he put on the podium multiple times. Lewis peak wasnt at Mercedes. It was finishing a race in that Mclrn.

Was Michael Masi unfairly treated over how Max Verstappen beat Lewis Hamilton to win the 2021 F1 title?

czechfog183635d ago

Yes. He made mistakes, but they should have looked at the entire situation with teams being able to contact him at that time. He was strong on track safety and I liked that about him.

bizmail2roger50d ago

I don’t see how. He changed the rules in a way that very obviously gave an advantage to one driver over another. It was a change that had never been seen in any other race that season yet he chose to do it for this one. He ignored the fact that it could fundamentally change the outcome of the race, OR he did it because it would? We may never know.

jferris21654d ago

No it was an absolute disgrace what happened to lewis hamilton if it had been done properly and max won then nobody could have complained as max raced well all season but you the procedure at that time was a disgrace

fogclimber1998165d ago

Easily Robert Kubica! I wanted the new Mercedes team in 2010 to be Nico Rosberg and Robert Kubica. Michael Schumacher had already had that bad motorcycle accident in 2009 and should have stayed out of racing. I think Kubica could have won at least one WDC!

In a parallel universe where Toto Wolff fired Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg, who won the 2017-2020 titles?

david.comerford172d ago

Sebastian Vettel would probably have been a world champion at Ferrari...

soumyajitdas06092006173d ago

Such a parallel universe just doesn't exist LOL 😆. But suppose it does exist, then the team will probably be Vettel and a rookie Verstappen. Merc will make Vettel a 7 time WDC (17, 18, 19) and Verstappen a 7 time WDC (20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29). (I really think Mclaren and Lando had it in them to win the 24 if Max didn't exist and Ferrari in 22 and 23).

Verstappen win by total car dominance 2022-2024. The same as Lewis 2014- 2015.

michaelram159d ago

It blows my mind that Lewis Hamilton is not in this conversation. Somethings wrong. People seem to think that Lewis won only because of his car. Well I'll remind them that he been winning since he was a kid, not just with the Mercedes car. What has Max done now that everyone has caught up with the Red Bull car in the current era. +only 3 real championships!

gillycaroleillman160d ago

Vettel has the plus of being a nice guy and more complete driver. Max just drives 'foot down' that's why he was complaining about the new system..he can't stick his foot down to the floor... too many other things to do now with these cars! Ha!ha!ha!!
