What, in your opinion, has gone wrong for McLaren this year? 📉
czechfog183667d ago
Late in developing the car is definitely an issue. But Oscar Piastri cannot match Lando Norris this season. He still struggles with low grip conditions, which is more common with the new cars. There is just not as much downforce as in the previous GE cars.
tyler.rowlinson85d ago
McLaren are definitely paying the price for focusing on 2026 too late. They’ll come good eventually, but blaming Mercedes for their power unit troubles won’t help them
aaditya.krishnamurthy85d ago
I think F1 teams need to strike a balance with developing their car for the new season while not totally neglecting their ongoing year. McLaren didn't do that, and it cost them. Yes the Mercedes engine matter hasn't helped, but Alpine have outperformed expectations with the same engine, so they don't have much of an excuse.

If you were Zak Brown, would you sign Max Verstappen or keep Oscar Piastri?
czechfog183667d ago
I am biased here. I would prefer that McLaren keep Oscar Piastri. I have no idea what the CEO, Zak Brown, will do.
john.etherington74d ago
I'd Boot Lando. He almost lost them the title because Zak would never have let Oscar beat him. Max and Oscar are both better drivers but Zaks loverboy Lando will not let Max win so Max won't be going to McLaren

wilsonjimwilson86d ago
With the immense demands Verstappen is making, plus the toxic baggage that comes with him in the form of his management and father, I don't think any team should sign him. Red Bull should recognise that he's hurting their brand image a lot now, and find a way to cut ties as amicably as possible.
♥ 1
I think Oscar is champion material I don't know for sure will it be will mclauren sorry wrong spelling but I am sure with the right car he can certainly do it,
david.comerford89d ago
I agree. I actually wonder if, long-term, he could have a higher ceiling than Lando. He's only just passed 75 races

Which team should Oscar Piastri join if he leaves McLaren?
czechfog183667d ago
Red Bull is a great choice, but also Mercedes if they let George Russell go.
duggsduggan289d ago
Oscar is a good racer I don't know which team would get him but they would be getting a potential world champion well that is my view for what it is worth but good luck to Oscar I think that he will do someday,

Red Bull the only competitive choice

Where would Max Verstappen and Lando Norris rank among McLaren’s greatest line-ups?
czechfog183667d ago
Very high, as both have a WDC in their CV. A better lineup than what they had in 2007 with Alonso and Hamilton, who was a rookie that season. But nothing compared to Senna and Prost.
shaymlessevents89d ago
Ive seen better journalism in a kindergarten. Get a grip. Youre just fanning a flame that doesnt exist.

Arguably as good as Hamilton and Leclerc
Lando Norris’ retirement means McLaren has missed five points-scoring opportunities in 2026! 😬 Where does this rank among F1's poorest title defences?
walkercharlie828118d ago
This happens when regs change. Merc didn't sniff red bull in 2022
david.comerford120d ago
The last time it was this bad was probably Sebastian Vettel in 2014
aaditya.krishnamurthy120d ago
This is just an abysmal start to the season from the world champs, and I say this is a huge McLaren fan! Where can things go from here? Nowhere but up, hopefully

McLaren celebrate their 1,000th Grand Prix in Monaco 🤯 but what is their best-ever era?
ahambly23122d ago
Results wise, it has to be that late 80s/early 90s era, but personally, the late 00s/early 10s is a standout for me.
elizablackstock122d ago
I am a consummate history nerd with a deeply generous definition of "best", so I'm going with McLaren's M7 era! It was such a different time; an aspiring driver-turned-team-owner could gather a handful of keen minds and put together a car that could somehow win a Grand Prix. That's absolutely incredible to me!
kyle.archer122d ago
It is surely impossible to argue that the 1980s was McLaren's best-ever era, with five drivers' titles and four constructors' titles.

Nico Rosberg thinks Lando Norris needs to be much more aggressive against Max Verstappen. Is Norris too nice, or just sensible?
david.comerford125d ago
I agree that Norris could be more ruthless, but 'cause a crash' doesn't seem like good advice, even from a fellow world champion

Should McLaren start building their own engines like Red Bull?
czechfog183667d ago
That is a subject for discussion with their owners! Huge expense!
aaditya.krishnamurthy130d ago
Honestly, if McLaren are going to do it, they need to start working on it now. If the target isn't 2030, then they can afford to decide later, but we've seen how much Mercedes are benefitting from their PU, which they started working on right at 2022.
marcus.chan130d ago
With all their experience in the field, they should be more than capable of producing their own engine. But with the Mercedes PU being the best, why move away from that?

Why do McLaren keep making strategy errors?
aaditya.krishnamurthy132d ago
I think McLaren often have this paranoia of getting the deicision or strategy wrong, which ironically, ends up resulting in them getting their strategy wrong by overthinking things

Will Oscar Piastri win a world championship as a McLaren driver?

Does Oscar Piastri 'tighten up' under pressure?
seanfisher137d ago
The narrative quickly changed from Oscar being the ‘ice man’ of the grid to a youngster who felt the pressure. That turning point was Baku
aaditya.krishnamurthy144d ago
I wouldn't say so, holding a few isolated incidents from last year against Piastri as a driver is quite unfair. It wasn't him tightening up late last year, it was more so his talent not being able to compensate for his lack of experience in championship situations.
david.comerford145d ago
Possibly a tiny bit harsh from JB given it was only Oscar's third season
Oscar Piastri drove Hamilton’s MP4-23 McLaren car in Miami. But how would he have fared against a young Lewis?
seanfisher137d ago
Would have been a competitive rival for a young Lewis… but this is a young Lewis Hamilton we’re talking about!
david.comerford157d ago
Hamilton was a little raw in that period of his career but it's hard to recall any driver showing more speed in their first two years. I think it would have been too much for Oscar
tyler.rowlinson158d ago
That would have been an interesting battle I reckon. But if a young Hamilton can take the fight to prime Alonso, there’s no way Piastri beats him

Does Oscar Piastri still need Mark Webber at McLaren?
david.comerford161d ago
I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss his value. Three seasons still isn't a lot compared to the drivers he's up against
aaditya.krishnamurthy161d ago
Probably not, and if he’s at odds with the driver over McLaren, Webber could be a distraction for Piastri.
tyler.rowlinson161d ago
Maybe not so much on the management side of things, but Piastri would be foolish to cut ties with Webber altogether. The experience and knowledge he has is incredibly helpful for him

Rank each of McLaren's recent hires from Red Bull out of 10 after signing Gianpiero Lambiase
fogclimber1998163d ago
From my viewpoint, Rob Marshall was a 10. Will Courtenay an 8.5, and Lambiase should be an 8. Zak Brown may be an odd duck, but he hires good people.
♥ 1
ahambly23164d ago
Marshall was an integral part of McLaren's success last year, I'd give him a strong nine out of ten. It remains to be seen how effective Courtenay and Lambiase are, but I'd give the latter a ten purely for it being such a bombshell!
kyle.archer165d ago
Rob Marshall has been a solid 8/10 for McLaren, but it is too soon to judge Will Courtenay's impact and what Gianpiero Lambiase might bring when he eventually joins.

Have McLaren been treated fairly by Mercedes this season?
Juan Pablo Montoya thinks Mercedes have kept secrets about their engine 🕵️♂️
tyler.rowlinson168d ago
As the factory team, it’s seems only right that Mercedes look to gain any advantage they can. They don’t want to be losing to a customer team on the regular
david.comerford169d ago
Mercedes are just trying to exploit any advantage they can, as McLaren would in the same situation

Which McLaren driver will leave the team first?
Let us know your reasoning in the comments!
eileenallan88169d ago
Oscar
fogclimber1998169d ago
Within two more seasons, I believe that Oscar Piastri will consistently beat Lando Norris. But who leaves depends on what offers they get. There is no reason for either of them to leave and go to a weaker team. If Max leaves F1, would Red Bull make an offer to Lando?
davepest8174d ago
NORRIS

It sounds like Andrea Stella could leave McLaren! How big a blow would this be?
Erik van Haren of De Telegraaf broke the story
fogclimber1998169d ago
I do not believe he will leave McLaren. Just rumors.
george.patten179d ago
Would be tough to take - But think Zak Brown has proven he knows how to appoint the right people, so wouldn’t be too concerned
aaditya.krishnamurthy179d ago
This is a massive blow for McLaren. Even if they're going to replace him with GP (which is the plan), I can't see how Stella leaving after his track record won't hurt them in some way.

Zak Brown guarantees that McLaren will win 'sooner rather than later'
When do you expect them to get off the mark under the new rules?
czechfog1836191d ago
Remember that Zak is the CEO, NOT the TP.
kyle.archer199d ago
I cannot see McLaren winning a Grand Prix before the summer break, if at all this year, after their start to the season...
aaditya.krishnamurthy199d ago
Any success they have (P4 or higher for either/both Lando and Oscar) is going to come after the Japanese Grand Prix. Right now, they have too many problems that need to be worked on.

Is Lando Norris' championship title defence already over?
czechfog1836191d ago
Many will think that, but two races is not enough to draw conclusions.
tyler.rowlinson202d ago
It looked like his title defence was never really on with how Mercedes were looking in pre-season. Now McLaren are so far behind them, it's hard to see him retaining the championship.
david.comerford202d ago
Not quite, but almost. The April break might help them - more time to develop the car, less time for Mercedes to build the gap?
Here it is 👀 McLaren reveal their MCL40 livery...
czechfog1836237d ago
It is okay with me. I do not get too crazy over a livery. This is better than what Ferrari has!
rebecca.braybrook237d ago
It's so similar but there does appear to be more Papaya so it will be nice to have a bit more colour in the grid!
tyler.rowlinson237d ago
Don't fix what isn't broken I guess. I do like that there's more papaya on the car than last year, but yeah, slightly underwhelmed
Not sure he'll be allowed to say anything different!

Did Oscar Piastri just end the debate over McLaren's papaya rules?
marlene.emonson222d ago
No, he was gagged, they do pay his salary, but not for much longer
ahambly23241d ago
I think the actual truth about McLaren's team orders will only come to light once Piastri or Norris leaves the team and spills the beans...

It would be a huge shock if Oscar Piastri said anything different about how McLaren handled the internal title fight in 2025.

Will Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri always be on good terms?
ahambly23242d ago
Andrea Stella has done a great job at keeping them amicable at McLaren, maybe we'd see the real side to their relationship if one of them left and they fought for another title.
tyler.rowlinson242d ago
If Piastri gets closer to Norris, or is allowed to by McLaren, I can see tension boiling between the two. Maybe not as bad as Hamilton-Alonso or Hamilton-Rosberg though
kyle.archer242d ago
The 2025 F1 title fight should not have done too much damage to Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri's relationship. But if they continue to fight between them for the title in the future, or McLaren fail to manage things behind the scenes, friction would be inevitable.
Who will be McLaren's top driver in 2026 - Lando Norris or Oscar Piastri? 🤔

Do you agree with Max Verstappen's view on McLaren's team orders?
david.comerford256d ago
I think Verstappen is the other extreme, but I'll be interested to see if Piastri is as compliant this year
aadityak24265d ago
Well we know Max’s history with team orders 👀 especially when they’re not to his liking
walkercharlie828265d ago
In that circumstance, in what was a two-man title race at the time, he's right. And he learned it the hard way at the end of the season.
Prove us wrong: McLaren have the BEST driver line-up on the 2026 grid
duggsduggan289d ago
Yes it would be hard to beat Leclerc and Hamilton if ferrari gets their car running right, I am not a Hamilton fan but they would be a hard act to follow,
thieroffjurgen1264d ago
They do if Piastri is also treated as nr 1 this is suppurp
aadityak24265d ago
I don’t think this is up for debate as things stand. This is a results oriented sport, and Lando and Piastri have the results to make this claim
Prove me wrong: McLaren do not need to change their papaya rules for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
shemileheskey5000271d ago
Depends how they both perform really? If there’s a drop off from either it won’t be necessary…
ben.evans271d ago
Oscar Piastri's fans would argue otherwise...
Where do you think Lando Norris will rank among McLaren's greatest drivers when he retires?
duggsduggan289d ago
God knows because it is to early with only one championship and not doing much this season so far,
david.comerford256d ago

Would you have a number one driver if you were an F1 team boss?
czechfog1836252d ago
Absolutely. I still believe that McLaren made a mistake in 2007 by not naming 2 X WDC Fernando Alonso their #1 driver before the first race and backing him all the way. He could have won his 3rd consecutive title for McLaren. Ron Dennis appeared to be infatuated with young Lewis Hamilton. But no one could know before the season how good Hamilton could be.
kyle.archer290d ago
It depends on what the team's objective is - If the drivers' title is the goal, it is far easier to have a clear No1 (like Red Bull). But if the target is to improve, having two equal drivers is crucial as you are not then relying on one to bring home the points (like Alpine)
ahambly23290d ago
I'd make a decision at the summer break, if a driver was clearly more superior, focus would have to go on them. If it's more neck and neck, then equality would have to be the way to go

Are we entering another era of Mercedes engine domination?
duggsduggan289d ago
I don't think George is all that and a bag of chips, I think that there is much better on the grid,
jmreading6223d ago
XE EETIf the compression ratio loophole thingy really is as powerful an advantage as their rivals are claiming, then at least until the summer break, yeah it's likely the Merc powered teams have an engine advantage, and the Mercedes team probably have an advantage over their customer teams, as they'll have much more experience of how to exploit it fully.
czechfog1836254d ago
I hope so!
Oscar Piastri's classy response to losing the title to Lando Norris
ronot0262294d ago

kyle.archer298d ago
Norris and Piastri were able to avoid their relationship collapsing during their 2025 F1 title fight. But it remains to be seen how their relationship will develop if Piastri cannot bounce back in 2026 and Norris leads McLaren into the new regulations cycle.
george.patten298d ago
I don't think they have as much of a relationship as people think. Out of Lando's three F1 teammates, I'd argue he gets along with Oscar the worst...

Is there a vendetta against McLaren?
david.comerford311d ago
If there was anything amiss, Piastri would have let it slip by now
There was a thread on Reddit a month or two ago title "Why Piastri fans are rightfully upset". Had all the receipts. I think McLaren have tried to meddle too much generally, but most of it has benefitted Norris. Is that intentional? That's for the tin-foil hat
