Was Michael Carrick right to bench Bruno Fernandes vs Bournemouth?
United lost the game 3-0... do you still agree with the decision not to give Bruno ANY minutes?
ericisgod661w ago
He deserved to be dropped but not humiliated. Why bench him then get him to warm up then leave him out. This smells more like SJR. Though if thats true then Carrick is yellow for not saying no. If they left him out it was right bench him till 60-65 min that would be right but they were wrong to treat him the way they did
barryroberts721w ago
Carrick was spot on to drop Bruno to the bench it doesn't matter who you are, there isn't any player "bigger than the club" Fergie did it with Beckham & Keane. Players seem to forget that they were bought to play for the club, to wear the shirt, it's the club that pays them the big wages, not Carrick.
willysauti51w ago
Bruno deserved to be dropped never the less his assessment of Man Utd's tactical approach was spot on...
deansexton461w ago
he was right to do it but the way the board is going to sack him is disgusting,if they do sack him, cause since sir Alex left, mad utd has become a training ground for management, ineos, berraeda Wilkins, haven't got a clue, you don't but 3 rate players and expect Carrick to train them into the team,it just ain't going to happen,so sack him and move on to the ne
gkambugu1w ago
Yes. Absolutely. He's the captain but his attitude towards the current storm, his critique of his manager kill team spirit. He had to cool the temperature. Great decision
niko1w ago
Yes Bruno deserved to be dropped for speaking out against a manager who reorganized the team that made him Player of the Year. He should apologize and show respect because Carrick is not his problem. Carrick deserves kudos for taking that decision.
ken49.m1w ago
He was totally wrong to speak out the way he did. He let the Manager down and I guess he wants to leave and that's why he did it
deansexton461w ago
should have put the under 21s on we would have probably got a result
aadhias1w ago
Even if we didn't, they would've learned something
kyle.dimond1w ago
I think he had to, it’s just very unfortunate timing that he’s had to bench his best player in a time like this. Still, playing him would’ve massively undermined Carrick I think. Probably on his way out either way
suganmoodley191w ago
Utter bull Bruno makes a very big diff to side without him was like headless chicken. Yes he has been not performing but its due to other players not performing. Which Captain wont get frustrated he gives he heart n soul for UTD
dancoombs1w ago
He has given everything for United I completely respect that. He also stepped out of line so a one- game punishment isn’t unreasonable. Let’s see if he comes back in
mazambanivs1w ago
NO. We should understand that almost every star player does not want to be associated with failure and they are justified to get frustrated and make comments on problems that are not within their authority and capability to solve, especially if in one way or another they are also held accountable, or their reputations are tarnished. Their faces tell it all.
peter.lynch1w ago
I think this was the wrong call. Easy with hindsight of course but you need your best players starting, and Bruno is United’s best player, simple as that
caleb.sage1w ago
I think he should’ve started. You make a point by dropping him, but when you’re on the verge of getting sacked, what do you need to do more, make a point or win a game? It’s the latter, and Bruno increases your chance of doing that. Stamping authority won’t mean anything if you’re not even at the place next week lol.
luksricky1w ago
No, mgt doesn't mean you manage only the disciplined but rather all.....the stubborn might even prove better than the disciplined.
edd1w ago
There's a difference between dropping Bruno and refusing to use him at all? At 2-0 down, with United struggling to create anything, you've got one of your most creative players sitting on the bench. That's when the manager has to put his pride aside and think about the result. You can make your point without effectively writing off the game.
dancoombs1w ago
That was the most shocking thing about the weekend. I feel it would have been more of a punishment for Bruno to go out there and play and feel to wrath of the fans
bprj21w ago
iheromyyes Bruno acted out of,line speaking out but it showed COMMITMENT! A slap on d wrist wud had been enuff but Carrick chose 2 spit in d air n d spit had landed back onto his own face! Bruno shd had been brought on @ half time wen it was clear dat d team WAS STRUGGLING! BRUNO CUD HAD MAKE A DIFFERENCE! YET ANOTHER BAD DECISION BY CARRICK!
jackgallagher1w ago
Right thing to do. Can't call out a manager like that
stephenjholmes11w ago
You need to wonder what Bruno has said behind closed doors before hand. I have been frustrated since the Hull game, and I ain't the 1 out there Infront of 75,000 fans. I actually feel for Bruno. He is a winner, and it isn't going to happen without people stepping up. And that can be the coaches.
stephenjholmes11w ago
Bruno needed to be dropped weeks if not months ago. But not because of his comments. Bruno needs a rest. A good manager would see that, and would never of been so reliant on him. There have been many players not producing the goods, but none have had repercussions for it. The responsibility lies at Michael's door. Michael needs to become no2 to a proper man!
ericjsmithesq1w ago
As per my earlier post about the Brighton set-up.
ericjsmithesq1w ago
I don't remember Madonna being much of a philosopher, mind you. those pointy bra cups were quite good, at the time.
nrobbo641w ago
Definitely correct he should have been rested some time ago
aadhias1w ago
I feel like we've grown too dependent on and fond of Bruno that most wins are attributable to his contributions that we tend to forgive him for his mispasses or poor crossings
epi2media1w ago
100%.
lee.connor1w ago
I was glad to see he did it and even more so let him rot the entire game on the bench. The guy is a major problem and has been for years. Above any manager, he and others need moving on. He is part of a group who has consistent cost managers their jobs. Felt like a big statement of FU from Carrick!
bonifacemasese1w ago
You finally got a chance to project. You've just silently hated him 'for years'.
adnan.riaz1w ago
He was 100 per cent right. Carrick was sending a statement, regardless of what happens to him at the club.
georgemukami261w ago
It is a good choice but for now, man utd don't have a good playmaker except Bruno. Whole team don't have intensity.
adnan.riaz1w ago
It's very true. We are stuck right now. But I think this is Bruno's last season at Old Trafford.
gomatz771w ago
Maybe to make a statement yes, as Manchester United the team shouldn't have dipped to the level they did in this game, Bruno or no Bruno
adnan.riaz1w ago
Agreed. The other Man Utd players needed to step up in Bruno's absence and they equally let Carrick down in the match.
epi2media1w ago
I think Utd need to change player power system and stick with MC, even if we lose. This lot is sabotaging the club. Only those who want to play can play. Teams that are winning do not necessarily have superstars but professionals who just do their jobs. Man U players are not doing their jobs. They are cons. Was glad fans at OT saw thru it today!
antowzky1w ago
Agree with this! I'd rather have a squad of kids who give their all then this bunch of fakes who walk around the pitch when the going gets tough... Its even more ridiculous when you think about how much these players earn week in and week out
adnan.riaz1w ago
Think Carrick's time is up, as we're now 16th and we could easily end up in the relegation zone if a change is not made.
mzorens22091w ago
WATEVER HAPPENED BETWEEN MANAGER&PLAYER.WATER UNDER DE BRIDGE.GARRICK SCORED 3OWN GOALS BY BENCHING BRUNO.HE'S A FANTASTIC,BRAVE PLAYER AND HEVING SCORING BOOTS ALWAUS😔🤔
adnan.riaz1w ago
Nobody is doubting Bruno's impact. But he has self-inflicted his own problems at the club.
markmarston1w ago
Yes, he has to show authority. It sets a terrible example if he doesn’t and creates a bad culture…
adnan.riaz1w ago

jonathan.gorrie1w ago
100%! Say Bruno played and scored a screamer to seal a win, would anything actual meaningful change? The best possible outcome would have just kicked the can down the road a bit. Fair play to Carrick, he's almost certainly off but he's no mug
adnan.riaz1w ago
Spot on. If Carrick is going out, which, let's face it, he defo is, he's leaving with his head held high. And he really is doing that this time around.
kilham.max1w ago
I really feel this is a repeat situation. Every time something goes awry for Man United, a player is scapegoated. Of course, Bruno's comments were untimely, but they were also objectively correct [as were Martinez's]. Bruno is the club's best player and objectively the best signing post-Fergie. If anyone in that team can turn their fortunes around, it's him.
kilham.max1w ago
So no, I don't believe it was the correct decision. The horrendous decision making of the higher-ups cannot be pandered to any longer.
antonymmartin841w ago
100 per cent the correct call. However, Carrick is out of his depth at this level and he will know himself he needs to move on now.
dancoombs1w ago
The decision also exposed how useless Mason Mount is. One of our highest earners, number 7 shirt, there’s the chance he has been waiting for. No impact
thetruthpersonified1w ago
I was a big advocate for Mount. When he was younger and on loan at Derby - sublime. Then a couple of excellent seasons with Chelsea. Now, frankly done with him as of today. Thought he could turn it round if fit. Now, I could not care less and do not believe he will do so.
antonymmartin841w ago
Nowhere near good enough for man united Dan. How much did yous pay for him, 60 mill?
daviescallum421w ago
100% the right decision. Rubbish with him, rubbish without him. Had to send a message after he spoke out. Carrick probs get the sack now anyway
tom.procter1w ago
Correct decision for me regardless of whether he could have made an impact today. You can’t talk like that and not face consequences
shamanth.jayaram1w ago
Absolutely right to drop him, should've left him out the squad. Carrick showed who's the boss - albeit he may no longer be that after this result
will.butcher1w ago
Wouldn’t have made a difference. If Carrick does go, he goes knowing he stuck true to himself
dancoombs1w ago
Precisely. Bruno was due to be dropped on form regardless
seanfisher1w ago
Yep, would’ve been a desperate move to bring him on to try and save things
ericisgod661w ago
Carrick is spineless
chillout1w ago
To be fair, benching him wasn’t spineless - pointless (literally), maybe.
ericisgod661w ago
Benching him whole match is a decision of an amateur and im sure thats not carrick
jonny1w ago
The way he’s been playing this season he deserved to be dropped, wouldn’t have impacted the score at all
thetruthpersonified1w ago
That is the right point. Should have already been 'rested'.
seanfisher1w ago
Still think it was the right decision. I love Bruno but he was out of order. Fergie would’ve left him in the stands
febced11w ago
Omitting Bruno was showing who's the boss❓ Stubbornness won't help anybody. Look at Lacey, Tielemans, Santos, and Baleba - all pedestrians in midfield, passing woeful, dispossessed easily. The attack was without any spunk. MC, your time is up.
stephenjholmes11w ago
What are you on? What has Lacey done to deserve your comment. He has had about 15 minutes of football, and all when the team are a minimum of 3 goals down. Are you Carrick in disguise?
jamesshearman231w ago
It doesn’t look that way now 😮
freddie1w ago
He was absolutely right to do it! Speak out, get punished. Should have done the same with Martinez
thetruthpersonified1w ago
He was right and wrong. Right to drop Bruno but to have him on the bench but determined not to bring him on was weak and cowardly. Terrible man and team management. An additional punishment and attempt at humiliation. Bruno should have been in stands or not at ground.
dancoombs1w ago
Bruno would have made no difference to that shitshow. No recent evidence to suggest otherwise
chillout1w ago
So what good will a new manager do ? Doesn’t the rot go far deeper than the manager?
jordan.harris1w ago
Definitely the right decision. Bruno wouldn’t have saved them today. Clearly the fans have a lot of sympathy for Carrick and the situation he’s been put in
chillout1w ago
It’s just a question of whether they put him out of his misery today or tomorrow now. I can’t believe that there is no ready made plan for what seemed inevitable even before this game.
charlesjones1w ago
Wouldn’t have made a difference would it
chillout1w ago
Probably not in the end - but he might have just hung on. Zerbi was dead man walking, and 2 wins and all of a sudden he looks to be Manager of the Month !!
vatsal1w ago
Because we won the last seven when he started?
chillout1w ago
That is fair - it’s a difficult decision. If United had won, Carrick would have looked strong and right. But….
dale.odonnell1w ago
Right decision regardless of how the game went. No player is bigger than the club.
chillout1w ago
I get what you are saying - but that decision looks pretty pointless now.
