Personally, I think the hate towards Stroll is a bit unfair. That car is causing a lot of the problems at the moment. Alonso had also said at the start of the year that he wouldn't be retiring if the car was bad this year.

Alonso said at the start of the year that he wasn't going to retire this season if the car was bad and that he wanted to end the season on a good note, so as you said, it's unsurprising!
