What was the biggest error LIV Golf ever made?

What do the Arabs know about golf??? money making racket and attracted the greedy in the game

Greg Norman thought enrolling Rahm in 2023, at that time expected to dominate the world of golf for years, was a knock out blow for PGA and DPWT. Rahm had 18 wins including two majors, while Scotty just a fraction of those. Wrong decision that preceded the immediate rising and dominance of Scheffler and the death of LIV, just a poor exhibition league

No one here seems to understand what the point of LIV Golf was, and that it has been a huge success. The point of LIV was to be a disruptor. To disrupt the PGA a stuffy, traditional organization. Who had because set in its old ways, trapped by its traditions and history. A monopolistic good ole boy's club who refused to change and had lost the younger demo.

While I think you’re right, I don’t think you can say that was the point of LIV. The Saudis wanted a seat at the table, and they’re walking having failed on that front. Definitely agree that LIV gave the PGA Tour a much needed kick up the backside though

They should have went after all the young up and commers. Would have cost them a lot less allowing them to make the prize money out of this world for young stars of the game. And they would have the most talented players in just a few years. Instead they went after the superstars, most of them just starting their decline in talent.

Completely agree! Also think that would have stopped the PGA Tour going on the defensive straight away

I think some of this was simply fans disengaging and losing interest after seeing an organisation that was clearly trying to buy its way into a sport, with some average players being paid an obscene amount of money. I don’t believe any true golfing great will have emerged from the LIV fiasco.

54 holes with no cut and a shotgun start. Immediately told everyone they weren’t serious

When you start forking out stupid sums before there is even fans interested in it, it's destined to fail. Happening in other sports too.

It was ill planned from the go, as a casual fan I watched one or two but it didn’t have the same excitement or straight forward nature of PGA golf. I wasn’t a fan of the team aspect - I always thought of it as that annoying company which was in happy Gilmore 2. Doesn’t help that the face of it is an influencer (Bryson DeChambeau)

So true mate! Spent too long focusing on being everything the PGA Tour wasn’t

LIV’s biggest mistake was thinking that paying big-name players to leave the PGA Tour would be enough for fans to follow them. LIV was never likely to appeal to the casual fan, especially those who only watch golf for the major events, that way.

Paying all these unknown players silly money! 🤑❌
jonny2mo ago
I wouldn’t say they’re all unknown…

Paying people too much! It just wasn’t sustainable
callum_boyle2mo ago
Ran before they walked. No sustainable long-term plan in place, they just wanted numbers and faces. A lot of the other projects hosted by Saudi figures, i.e. Newcastle. Promised the world but delivered far from it
jonny2mo ago
Can be said with a lot of the sports projects Saudi Arabia have handled. Roll on the 2034 World Cup 🥲

From someone who doesn’t really watch golf - If they just had the same format as the PGA I’d have been more likely to tune in. Messing around with teams just felt gimmicky to me at least
johnverrall112mo ago
Financially it was the exorbitant sums they were offering before the league had an established fan base. However, I think not giving fans a reason to support teams was the biggest issue. Hardly any of the teams had an identity. They should have been nations or regions from the start

Too big too quick. Needed to build an alternative model from the PGA Tour system for lower ranked players and build it sustainably over time. Instead they tried to attack it with a sledgehammer
antonymmartin842mo ago
Not having cuts. One of the most enthralling watches for fans is players scrapping it out to make the cuts on Fridays. Zero jeopardy = zero excitement
jordan.harris2mo ago
Overpaid for players who were never going to move the needle I think
