City’s 115 charges vs. The Glazer Takeover: Which is the worse crime against football?

ericisgod662d ago

And that killed Rule34 and so ended over 100 years of protection from greedy investors znd owners, protection that was implemented for the fans too

I agree dale odonnell and i have been part of it since joining Shareholders in 2000. Got my 1 share when i joined. Had 11 when advised to sell. Kept all sorts of news electronic and hardcopy. Im not a journo but wrote a book about it released early 2023 recently updated to june 30 2026

For me, it’s the Glazers. I’ve been writing about their debt-ridden takeover since I got into journalism. Looking at the bigger picture, City have cheated the entire league and football pyramid. Europe too, even if they got away with that. It’s seismic. The difference here is the Premier League ignored the Glazer takeover. PL and the UK government.

It could be argued that the Glazer takeover made way for more greedy, sleazy owners that have no interest in protecting the Premier League clubs they buy. These are community assets and they should not be used purely as commercial cash cows or sportswashing entities.

Both are guilty as each other Glazers draining the pockets while Old Trafford decays into total ruin because the facilities have not be updated since Fergie. And for Man City a different kind of Greed which could punish them severely, pending on the investigation. The Glazers should accept punishment for the greed of taking finances away for the upkeep.

I still don't understand how the Glazers were able to buy a financially sound and well run club, with a loan they took out, and then transferred the loan to United, so that United went from a club without debts, into one with huge debts.

dancoombs5d ago

It should never have been allowed to happen. The FA had a chance to draw a line in the sand for the good of the game and to protect a profitable football institution who they should have regarded as a prized asset - and they chose not to

Citys GUILTY charges are the worst crimes against all Football Clubs in all Divisions and their Fans, the Glazers takeover was the worst Crime against a single Football club and their Fans, that ultimately was never backed by the FA.

dantowen819516d ago

Obviously I’m a United fan so I’m biased - but City is far worse. The Glazer’s cheated us, City cheated absolutely everybody

thatfan6d ago

Both equally as bad

plattysared56d ago

As for the City issue, relegated to league 2, owners banned from owning the club & transfer embargo for 5 years & financial constraints limiting them to the finances of the division they are in, that should be a deterrent for everyone else as well!!! 🤔

thetruthpersonified5d ago

As well as compensation to impacted clubs? All this would be sensible, which is why it will likely not happen. But I agree it would make sense.

plattysared56d ago

They are both terrible, don't care about City, but yeah the Glazer takeover should never be allowed to happen, what they have done to the club over the last 21 years has been disgusting, they've limited investment, they've taken money out of the club whilst saddling the club with huge debts costing us £70 million a year in interest, should be kicked out!!!!

dancoombs6d ago

What makes it worse is the Premier League have now banned debt-leveraged takeovers. But there’s no way to redress the mistake allowed in 2004. Just, ‘yeah sorry you are just going to have to deal with that’ towards United

seanfisher6d ago

As a United fan, I obviously hate the Glazer takeover and the structure of that deal has done irreparable damage. But what City have done is on a completely other level. Blatant fraud and cheating.

leeclarke05086d ago

The City thing by a mile. They best get a punishment that befits the crime 😂

seanfisher6d ago

It’s hard to even imagine how big the punishment should go if it was to accurately represent the damage they have done

thetruthpersonified6d ago

This is all perspective. One is cheating the league, the other is cheating the United fans. If I could change one, it would be the Glazers, but in terms of impact to the PL, the City charges are the worse crime. Both are unacceptable. If City owners are reviewed for "fit and proper", the Glazer should have a similar review! Glazers out!
