Is it time to end best-of-five-set matches in tennis?
How would you solve the issue of tennis matches lasting too long?
a.phil.a.hutchinson1d ago
No. 5 set matches are grand slam tennis. Instead let should be fault and they should scrap second serve. That would speed up matches.
nathandzschwartz1d ago
I’d rather them be 7 than 3. The problem is scheduling matches too late
fayenorth19372d ago
Grand slams should be 5 sets for males and females.
markjpatel2d ago
No, instead of ending best-of-five set matches, the women should be playing the same format in their Grand Slam tournaments. They don't deserve to get the same amount of prize money for best-of-three sets. Equal pay for equal work. Isn't this what they're always fighting for? Enough of this hypocrisy!

Why are there not a pool of maybe 100 random public. I know there are literally thousands of fans and it's risky to actually HEAR what the audience wants but try just 100. Quietly to an email address. I know there's sponsors but we are the ones buying tickets. Try having an open without us.

This falls in line with the coaching aspect. Losing the mental challenge of figuring things out on your own. It’s an aspect that makes tennis so unique. Rather than improve the game. It diminishes. Similar to the championing of gambling and now we have players with three meats by gamblers. Perhaps best of 3 until quarters or semis!
jurgen9796d ago
Or best of three until the finals.
goelgaurav19811w ago
Nooooo, Grand Slams get their "grandness" in part from the 5 set set-up. In fact, with equalized prize money, women matches (starting with QFs may be) should be made 5 setters.
htwhyppe2w ago
It ain't broke, don't fix it. We like the best of five. It adds drama, and requires a level of skill seen only in tennis.

No necessity to scrap best of 5 sets in grand slams..Djokovic unnecessarily raised the issue after becoming the.most succesful player in the history of Tennis.Borg, McEnroe,Connors,Ivan Lendl,Mats Wilander, Boris Becker,Stefan Edberg in 1980's played many best of 5 sets. and the great competitive tennis was witnessed by spectators.
jurgen9796d ago
But djokovic is 38 years old, no wonder he'd prefer grand slams to play best of three.
saketgadkari02w ago
nope
finlay.janabell2w ago
Absolutely not. Many players are just getting into their groove after three sets. I think that the women shoul play the best of 5 as well..
muirforest2w ago
No! The 5 set format is what makes tennis phenomenal in Grand Slams. If changed the records moving forward could not easily be compared. 5 set matches are testing the warrior in the athlete. TV money can still tune in and out, to change a heralded tradition is sad and speaks to the times. The greatest matches we've seen over the years have all been 5 sets.
imaneesh2w ago
Keep best 3 of 5. But no ad scoring or how about after reaching 40-40, first one to win 2 consecutive points?
ksbatchelor19612w ago
Absolutely not! In fact I think women and doubles should be 5 setters. The more tennis to watch the better.
lrjohnson502w ago
Absolutely not! Some of the best matches played in history have been best of five format. It always allows for dramatic comebacks and fitness.
wylie_kiote3w ago
Start them earlier!!
sharoncchan663w ago
Women should play 5 sets and make it equal with the men
daviescallum423w ago
I don't think that's the solution. We don't need MORE tennis. I think it's all perfect the way it is
daniell3w ago
So....let's shorten the Grand Slams ( the best matches ever) and watch a lot of 250 tournaments....are you serious tennis lovers?
maratd283w ago
Change number of games, or scoring system but leave 5 sets because if you cut just to best of 3 sets we will loose the aura of the Grand Slam
daniell3w ago
Grand Slams are all about 3 from 5...This is the definition of Slams. Everyone has a choice...watch or not
saketgadkari02w ago
true
daviescallum423w ago
Agreed. If you change Slams to best of 3, why are they then any different to a 1000, or 500, or even a 250?
jzent7603w ago
Definitely stop 5 set mens matches at Grand Slams. They only happen at these 4 tournaments now and this would help with players getting injured and withdrawing and reducing their schedule. Then the problem with womens and mens winnings would be irrelevant.
taniles133w ago
I'm old school so I actually miss them playing out the 5th in majors. Part of the special nature of majors is that they tested the fitness and endurance of the athletes. Of course, tennis is so brutal these days that I would welcome no-ad scoring, playing lets like college tennis, but keeping 5 sets and the match tiebreak in the 5th.
daviescallum423w ago
I saw someone say that the entire 5th set should be replaced by a tiebreak, so if it's 2 sets each, they just play a match tiebreak.
gandchollins3w ago
Yes! Either eliminate 5-set matches or pay men more for having to endure such a grueling format! Equal time/equal pay!
janegraham2919623w ago
I love it There should be less matched between slams all 3cset matches halved. It'd be a shame , I watch all yr round almost, but it's harming our players. That's definitely got to stop !
andnea18623w ago
Make the GST longer, giving the players a less stressful tournament.
ricoli80x3w ago
Please change the format so at 2 sets all they'll play a 10 point tiebreak. It hurts the players for the next round and who wants to watch a 5 hour match.
wylie_kiote3w ago
5hr matches are defining in there outcome, as to who has the stamina & can go the distance in this sport. I've been lucky enough to have seen some of the best 5set matches over the years & tennis wouldn't be tennis without them!
daviescallum423w ago
Some of the best matches of all time have been around 5 hrs
johnverrall113w ago
There is nothing wrong with the scoring system. Why does nobody have an attention span nowadays? Tennis being long and brutal at Slams is exactly how it should be. Don’t know why this debate even lingers
bamamatt73w ago
No, just shorten it. No ad scoring for a fifth set with the super tiebreaker still in place.
franichel3w ago
I've been saying this fir years! Its just too long! Best 2 out of 3 is the way to go...
johnverrall113w ago
Why do you want to watch less tennis?
daviescallum423w ago
Such an annoying narrative this, why should every sport have to pander to a generation with worse attention spans, which technically might not even be true! Tennis, football, everyone wants to change everything! Tennis is fine as is
peterquirk573w ago
Only non tennis players would even think up something so obnoxious and offensive
daviescallum423w ago
So true this, anyone who actually follows tennis and has a brain doesn’t want this to happen
camerondesc13w ago
Absolutely not, BO5 is what makes tennis great. I don’t buy the idea that the sport needs to change for attention spans.
tom.procter3w ago
Definitely not. Best of fives have led to so many incredibly absorbing and iconic matches. Do we really want to lose that? 🤔
leeclarke05083w ago
Not a chance. It's becoming tedious every tournament. Could understand if the players weren't producing five set classics but they are.
daviescallum423w ago
And not a single player complains either
kilham.max3w ago
Absolutely not. Barmy idea in all truth. So many classic matches that would end in a dull fashion. Do we want to make the sport blander in the name of convenience?
matthew.johns3w ago
I don’t think so, it’s what makes the Grand Slams special! However, I do wish they would allow women to play best-of-five as well, even if that meant best-of-three for both draws until the quarter-finals and then both play best-of-five.
andnea18623w ago
The schedule are already ridiculous playing well into early morning hours. Would then matches be played 24 hours. I don't think the players would be happy. Many are already frustrated with schedules now.
daviescallum423w ago
I can’t imagine the WTA stars liking this idea! 😅
peter.lynch3w ago
No way! This is what the people want. Fans can dip in and out of matches if they want to, the purists love it surely 🍿
george.patten3w ago
No, it’s fine as it is! Most the people complaining only watch a few matches a year anyway. The solution is simply to schedule better. Move the night sessions earlier, and don’t be afraid (Speaking to you French Open) to put two women’s matches back-to-back to end the day
