← Talk Sunderland

Five games into the new Premier League season, Sunderland sits in 14th slot. There remains a lot of optimism among the fans, and the manager is held in high regard. But is this just a season of consolidation - have some fun in Europe and ensure Premier League survival ? What makes for a successful season ?

I think Sunderland will be absolutely fine. Surely the fans would be ok coming 14th if it means they go far in Europe? Got to balance both and they definitely can given the size of the squad

Haven’t seen anywhere near the best of Fofana yet either

I guess it depends on the depth of their squad and whether they can effectively rotate. 7 teams have made the knockout stages of the Europa and been relegated in their domestic leagues that same season .

I agree actually! They can afford to enjoy themselves somewhat, should be confident of staying up but enjoying some Euro wonder days at the same time, great to see!

Success would be survival and a deep run in the Europa League. Those extra games will kill their league form

Staying in the PL while playing in Europe would make it a good season. It’s crucial they do that. But why not actually try to go all in in the Europa League? The way they played vs Man City makes me think they can genuinely go far

I think that’s exactly what this season is for Sunderland, and I think that’s fine! One incredible season shouldn’t suddenly hike up the expectations or that’s how things go sour quickly

As long as they stay up, anywhere between 15-10, and get decently far in Europe, I’d say that’s a good season.

A successful season for Sunderland this year is the Europe’s league final and staying up imo.

Given the performances that Sunderland put in against Arsenal and Man City on either side of beating AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League, there's no reason why they should sacrifice one for the other
