← Talk Sheffield Wednesday

Is it fair to say, that if Wednesday don’t meet the definition of sleeping giants, few other English clubs do ? Outside of the Premier League, I can’t see much further than them and Derby ?

caleb.sage4mo ago

More like a dead giant. What Chansiri did to that club man😩

filipe.guedes.guimaraes4mo ago

I think it’s worth to discuss Blackburn Rovers case. Three league trophies, almost 15 years out of the EPL and a miserable Championship campaign this season.

chillout4mo ago

Yes point!

The funny thing about English football is that there are SO many clubs who could realistically consider themselves to be sleeping giants - seems like half of the EFL have had real peak spells over the years

thatfan4mo ago

Despite all their troubles, massive respect to their fans who continue to turn up in numbers at every game to support their club 👏👏

kyle.dimond4mo ago

I think giant is probably a step too far when you factor in where others are

dantowen819514mo ago

How many self-professed ‘giant’ clubs do you reckon there are? When you factor in Wednesday, Blades, Derby, Leicester, you’ve probably got 30-plus

billy.meyers4mo ago

Definitely - sad to see what a horrid owner can do to such a prestigious club. The EFL need to have stronger checks in place to avoid this happening again 😡

callum_boyle4mo ago

They’re not a sleeping giant. They’re a club with a great fanbase and an iconic ground. I’d argue that there isn’t a single club outside of the top flight who are a sleeping giant in this current football climate

chillout4mo ago

I think that is definitely a sound view - especially as Sunderland and Leeds are now back in the top division, and Forest seem to be establishing themselves in the Premier League and starting to win in Europe again too.

gorriejonathan4mo ago

Maybe not sleeping giant but I’ve always found it a slight anomaly that a city like Bristol hasn’t ever really had a genuine powerhouse

kyle.dimond4mo ago

Yeah true. Gotta be one of the only major cities to not have one, maybe outside of like Cardiff

leeclarke05084mo ago

Just don't get any Derby County fan started on attendances... #WorstTeamInHistory

dantowen819514mo ago

Haha Middlesbrough fall into the same trap for me. Cant call yourself a giant club if the stadium is half empty even on your good days

jamie.brown824mo ago

Sheffield Wednesday most certainly aren’t a ‘sleeping giant’, their ground is more famous than the club itself…

james.brooke4mo ago

And for all the wrong reasons tragically

matthew.johns4mo ago

They are definitely the biggest club in League One and one of the biggest in the EFL!

johnverrall114mo ago

Are they bigger than Leicester?

jameslloyd14.jl4mo ago

Massive club are Wednesday, certainly bigger than Derby! Hoping with the right ownership they can do a Sunderland and get back to the prem

chillout4mo ago

Derby under Cloughie were big - two First Division titles in the 70s.

jonny4mo ago

Are they a sleeping ‘giant’? To me a giant is a club capable of being at the top of football, Villa were that, Forest are that right now. At what stage does a sleeping giant just become a club who used to be good🤔Wednesday haven’t been in the Premier League in my lifetime.

james.brooke4mo ago

Did you just say Forest are a club capable of being at the top of football?

gorriejonathan4mo ago

True, but football has been going on for a lot longer than that!

gorriejonathan4mo ago

Huddersfield from their success in the 1920s and Preston given their success in late 1880s? Think Pompey too, only team south of the River Thames to win the league!

james.brooke4mo ago

As a Huddersfield lad I can tell you that there’s nothing giant about Town. 100 years ago definitely, but not any more

charlesjones4mo ago

Huddersfield Town a sleeping giant. I’ve heard it all now.

charlesjones4mo ago

‘Giant’ is a bit of a stretch. They’re bigger than where they are but they don’t belong at the very top. Villa, Newcastle, Leeds when they were down were sleeping giants.

dantowen819514mo ago

Agreed Charles. Need a European pedigree I think to be classed as ‘giants’

jonny4mo ago

No doubt they’re a bigger club than their current standing shows, but completely agree giant is a stretch

robi4mo ago

Definitely a sleeping giant. Won more league titles than Tottenham 👀

thatfan4mo ago

Doesn't say a lot that TBH 😂

george.patten4mo ago

Yep - Massive club ruined by horrible owners

dale.odonnell4mo ago

That’s more than fair
