Does the oblique kick need to be banned from MMA?

Talks are ongoing regarding a potential ban of the oblique kick in MMA, but do you think that is warranted? Let us know why...

kyle.dimond1d ago

I’m so mixed on this. I wouldn’t be against them banning it but you can argue that any strike in MMA can end a career. I feel for that reason, it has to stay.

Yes however I feel it should come with the unbanning of knees to the head on ground and other moves that were deemed "dangerous" iff of old karate videos

jamie.theodosi5d ago

I think knees to the head of a grounded opponent has room to be unbanned. Just causes confusion at the moment with the current rules around when someone is deemed ‘grounded’.

Yes it should be banned because there's only a few fighters low enough to use it. Most men wont take such a cheap shot.

jamie.theodosi5d ago

Is it a ‘cheap shot’ though if it’s completely legal in the sport?

carmstrong21831w ago

Should it be banned? Yes I could get with that but before banning it we need to get our refs to enforce the rules we have on the books. An eye poke should be a point in almost every occasion outside of a guy grabbing your hand and forcing your fingers into his eyes. Right now even blinding a person will only cost you a stern warning

jamie.theodosi1w ago

Exactly my thoughts! What’s the point in banning the oblique kick if the referees aren’t going to enforce it properly.

scotthughes9781w ago

Nope uh uh f*** that strike man 😂😂 that Round tree oblique stomp is the stuff of nightmares

dr.cheyno1w ago

Exactly my thoughts. Its a horrible injury and totally unnecessary.

I can hear Bukauskas’ scream in my sleep!

Listen, it's MMA so most of the techniques can seriously harm somebody when done properly. I understand people's issues with it, but personally I think it's just a variation on a leg kick, almost a leg teep. As far as saying there is no defense, sure there is. Step back or even use the same method of blocking leg kicks.

Fighters face enough injuries Remove this issue for them

jamie.theodosi1w ago

Do you not think it would cause issues in terms of referees trying to regulate it?

harvey.leonard1w ago

Ban that and we may as well ban punches. This is MMA. We're okay seeing someone getting put out cold but we draw the line at a kick to the knee?

jordan.ellis1w ago

I’m on the fence. I get it can be a career changer but also feel MMA is a brutal sport and we’ve kinda just accept bad things can happen in the cage.

jameslloyd14.jl1w ago

I don’t really think so no, it’s part of the sport and surely it’s on the fighters to defend themselves from them? There’s been way more injuries and even worse ones from regular leg kicks

jamie.theodosi1w ago

I tend to agree, although it is very hard to defend against because of there being such little distance to close to land the strike. It’s such a grey area.

jamie.theodosi1w ago

My overall consensus is that MMA is brutal regardless. Yes, the strike does have a big injury rate, but it will just become another thing that referees fail to administer properly and it’ll just cause more confusion

freddie1w ago

It’s banned in the gym and sparring isn’t it? So why is it allowed in fights

jamie.theodosi1w ago

I wouldn’t say it is categorically banned in sparring and gyms, it’s more so fighters not wanting to injure their teammates in sparring. Similarly to how knees and elbows are kind of frowned upon in sparring.
