Was Kimi Antonelli's Monza win one of the best drives ever, or did the batteries make overtaking too easy?

matth3w ago

One of 'his' best drives ever. I couldn't say it was all down to the batteries. There are others out there who were also doing a great job of defending with their batteries. A really good drive. His going into the gravel could have ended differently.

You make a good point re defending, as far as I remember Kimi didn't really get sucked into yo-yo racing until he got to George

An excellent drive, and I don't want to take anything away from the young Italian, but the fact of the matter is that the batteries made this kind of comeback possible in quick time. The amount of yoyo racing between Antonelli, Russell, and Max, while entertaining, was just absurd.

Both apply. His car was clearly far superior to many on the grid. But he still went and beat his own teammate despite having to stop. An incredible drive.

Two things can be true: it was an excellent drive but it was also much easier than it should be

The batteries certainly made the overtaking a bit artificial, but take nothing away from Kimi. That is a drive worthy of being compared to the all-time greats. To go from P19 to P1 at Monza, which isn’t an easy track to pass on, is exceptional

A World Champion's drive. First year of regs always make it easier for top teams/drivers to pull these drives off because the pack is farther apart, but he made light work of everyone and I think would've keo George at bay without a VSC

seanfisher3w ago

Well.. I’m not sure about it being difficult to pass on 😅

david.comerford3w ago

No driver, no matter how talented they are, should be able to go from P19 to P1 in 18 laps. An all-time great drive, but the batteries and Mercedes' car advantage made it look like a video game on a low difficulty

Everyone had the same batteries and same opportunities. Kimi just did it better. Period.
