Did Aston Martin make a mistake dropping Mercedes as engine partners for Honda?

Rather discuss how large a mistake

Yes, and this is typical of the arrogance of Lawrence Stroll. He thinks his money can beat people who are wiser about F1 than he is.

McLaren show you can beat Mercedes even as a customer. This was a huge error

Aston have made an enormous number of mistakes. It's catastrophic. I imagine Honda can turn things around, but it will be some time until they can compete with Mercedes again. The only advantage they offered was being able to package the PU to fit into Newey's designs rather than Newey having to design around a PU. But that turned into a huge disadvantage.

It feels like they made the decision without doing any due diligence about the issues Honda had toward the tail end of their partnership with Red Bull, and just brought them in based on their previous successful history with Newey, and look how that turned out.

For short-term results, Aston Martin would surely have started 2026 on a stronger footing with a Mercedes engine in the AMR26. But Aston Martin joined forces with Honda for a long-term project, so will hope their disappointment only lasts the first few rounds of their relationship.
