Rangers fans could face facial recognition after new watchdog report, is this a worrying sign?
kyle.dimond1mo ago
Have my doubts about how well this would work, whether it would do the job its intended for. But, being able to more efficiently pick out people who ruin games has to be a positive. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be

This is one of those ideas where you initially think ‘ok, this might be good to stop wrongdoers’ but then you realise the governments version of ‘wrongdoers’ is very different from the public’s 🤣
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Exactly! Yet another step towards controlling the masses! Meh!
dantowen819511mo ago
I just don’t trust the authorities to use any tool like this fairly
freddie1mo ago
The games gone.
jonathan.gorrie1mo ago
Don't break the rules and you won't have a problem?
eoin1mo ago
Im extremely against It. Once this becomes the norm in one place, It Will have a knock on effect and in ten years time well be living out the plot of 1984
dale.odonnell1mo ago
Spot on.
george.patten1mo ago
If it’s targeted at one fan base I’m not sure I’m on board. But if it’s for everyone and keeps wrong end out then what’s the problem
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
No, it's a broad proposal for Scottish football after disorder at different games last season
dale.odonnell1mo ago
I don’t think it is. Has happened at Premier League matches already.
james.brooke1mo ago
People will have a problem with anything these days. Measures to protect fans and keep bad eggs out are bad now? Got it
jonny1mo ago
Many aren’t grasping that it won’t actually affect them unless they are themselves embroiled in criminal behaviour at the stadium
johnverrall111mo ago
Seems like you only need to worry about it if you’re going to break the rules…
eoin1mo ago
This would be true if the tech actually worked 100%. It doesnt, and has been pretty catastrophic when used in policing.
billy.meyers1mo ago
Pure dystopian nonsense. Get this crap out of football immediately ❌
dale.odonnell1mo ago
The amount of times - down the years - I’ve heard stewards tell people to shut up and sit down is beyond belief. This is another attempt from authorities to ruin fan culture. They’ll be telling us what songs to sing next, with lyrics on sheet under your seat 😴
chillout1mo ago
Bring on the bigots instead haha
dale.odonnell1mo ago
Extremely worrying and we’ve seen it in the Premier League at recent Manchester derbies.
chillout1mo ago
What exactly are you worried about - fans like you have nothing to worry about.
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Worrying trend ugh
dancoombs1mo ago
This will be brought in at grounds all over the UK this won’t be the first. Slippery slope
chillout1mo ago
I’m in favour of slippery slopes for those who break the law.
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Of course, on paper it protects the fans, but the truth is it's going to lead false arrests, misidentification and innocent fans having a criminal record to their name... which ultimately leads to more chaos and problems
shamanth.jayaram1mo ago
If the intention behind this is to keep fans safe and make sure the culprits are punished, it's obviously the right thing to do. Nobody should ever be worried about their safety while going to a game
jonny1mo ago
Fans don’t have anything to worry about if they aren’t doing anything wrong 🤷♂️this should make the ground a safer place, football is for all.
charlesjones1mo ago
Think that’s about right Jonny.
chillout1mo ago
100%. We need more of this, not less. It’s about time more people became accountable for their actions. Too many people get away with too much because we protect them and allow them to hide behind so-called civil liberties. The only liberty is that innocent people are constantly screwed by law-breaking clowns who face no consequences.
callum_boyle1mo ago
This is outrageous and should not be happening. Countries who have implemented this (Greece, Brazil, Russia) have all seen their most passionate supporters walk away from this. It’s George Orwell 1984 stuff and regardless of who you support, put your allegiances aside and get this vetoed
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Yep, real-time surveillance is evil, I'd say! Get rid
martin.crawford1mo ago
Will inevitably lead to normal people getting criminal records for singing songs whilst violence/abuse levels stay the same. The cycle of Scottish football legislation
chillout1mo ago
Why will people get a criminal record for singing songs ? What exactly are they singing ?
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Exactly my concern!
paddy1mo ago
Get this right in the bin. The step towards the criminilisation of fans moves forward
chillout1mo ago
Criminal fans will be arrested, and that’s fine by me. The rest of us have nothing to worry about.
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Yep! This should be a last resort, I think the authorities haven't exhausted other better and less extreme methods
jackdrury1mo ago
People won’t take responsibility for their actions unless there are repercussions. They need to be held accountable, and it sounds like there’ll be more of this with facial recognition
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
An Amnesty spokesperson has mentioned how the live facial recognition in England and Wales has already led to false arrests due to misidentification, though! That's not ideal at all
kyle.archer1mo ago
Facial recognition software in turnstiles seems to be a growing trend in football, but it is likely just the start...
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Yikes! Hope not!
chillout1mo ago
This isn’t an anti- Rangers comment. I’m in favour - I’d have it at as many grounds as possible (not sure of the cost implications ). Fans are entitled to feel safe at games - if this helps put away the louts, then bring it on.
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
But the cons tend to outweight the pros! Misidentification, innocent fans being wrongly arrested, etc!
dakir.thanveer1mo ago
Facial recognition and similar surveillance methods are never a good thing for society! I think there are other strategies the authorities haven't explored entirely! Hope this is rejected!
