Who is the most underrated Chelsea player of the Premier League era, and why? 👀

bafoteyodai16h ago

Marcus Alonso

codedrichie1d ago

Cus he's the best penalty taker for me back then...

kyle.dimond1d ago

I feel like Azpi is always named in lists like this so not sure he qualifies. Ivanovic however, that’s a pick.

caleb.sage1d ago

It took me a while, but as I started to understand football more, I came to realise how good Mikel actually was! He recycled possession and got out of presses as well as the Spanish midfielders do today.

cristiannnica2d ago

Dan Petrescu

adnan.riaz2d ago

Ramires! FIFA Ultimate Team legend back in the day as well. If you know, you know… 👀

edd2d ago

Surely Mikel has to be up there? Never the flashiest player and probably didn’t get the credit he deserved, but he was so important to that Chelsea midfield. Kept things simple, protected the defense and let the likes of Lampard, Ballack and Essien do their thing. There’s a reason so many different managers trusted him.

pranav.shahaney2d ago

Azpilicueta for me. Played as a right-back, left-back, right-sided centre-back in Conte’s back three as well as as an orthodox centre-back. In the title winning season under Conte, he was arguably the best defender in Europe and he’s never talked about as among the best defenders in Premier League history

dantowen819512d ago

Malouda was the first one that came to mind - Solomon Kalou I remember producing some very big moments in some title winning seasons

james.brooke2d ago

Gudjohnsen? Was never crazy prolific but always seemed to chip in a fair amount

antonymmartin842d ago

How about Dan Petrescu! Blinding little right back !

harveyleonard992d ago

Two options from the same position - Ivanovic or Azpilicueta. Two war horse right backs who were so reliable for so long

lee.connor2d ago

I’d go for Ivanovic probably, great player, no fuss and just did his job on the pitch in any position. Damien Duff was better than people give him credit for as well, top player and part of the early revolution.

dantowen819512d ago

Ivanovic - the fantasy football ever-present! Scored about 5 goals every season

james.brooke2d ago

I was just thinking Duff, him and Robben on either wing were unstoppable at one point

dale.odonnell2d ago

Ivanović or Cahill. Mourinho might say John Obi Mikel.

jonny2d ago

Nemanja Matic for me, fantastic midfielder and rarely gets the credit his teammates did in that side.

lrandall12102d ago

Victor Moses was great, and not quite sure he’s underrated but Juan Mata

brogan2d ago

As a Spurs fan, Alonso's name gives me absolute nightmares. The number of goals he scored against us was absolutely absurd... will never forget that free-kick at Wembley. What about Willian too?

jamie.theodosi2d ago

Nemanja Matic

adnan.riaz2d ago

Delivered early in his United run as well. Wish we had him when he was in his prime. 🥲

shamanth.jayaram2d ago

Azpi is the obvious answer and Cahill deserves a shout as well, but Ivanovic for me. Bloke barely looked like a footballer but came up with so many important moments

george.patten2d ago

I agree with Cahill. So solid, and had a lot more quality than many give him credit for

josh.barker2d ago

Don’t think Azpilicueta really gets enough credit, was so important to that back line

adnan.riaz2d ago

Major shout. He well and truly flew under the radar since he left Chelsea.

johnverrall112d ago

Branislav Ivanovic. Proper defender

adnan.riaz2d ago

Can never forget that legendary clip of him and Hazard talking about Arsenal either. 😆

chillout2d ago

Another one who scored goals too - second only to John Terry for the most goals scored by a defender in Chelsea’s history, I think. Played all but a few minutes in all 38 games of Chelsea’s 2014/15 Premier League winning season.

chillout2d ago

I think you are leaving out the obvious - Azpilicueta. Played in every position in the back line, and known for his leadership and complete tactical awareness. He achieved a feat no other Chelsea player had achieved at the club by the time he retired - winning every single available trophy then up for grabs.

charlesjones2d ago

Ramires I always thought was way overrated. Nemanja Matic maybe? Or is he so commonly named as underrated that he’s actually properly rated? I’d maybe give Gary Cahill a shout too. Never mentioned along the great defenders but his CV matches up to anyone.

adnan.riaz2d ago

Another Ramiers enthusiast.

chillout2d ago

Cahill was class - he actually also scored goals at Chelsea, too. Interesting he only had to wait a total of 16 games after signing from Bolton in 2012 to win both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

jordan.harris2d ago

These polls never fail to make me feel old 😂😂 I think Marcel Desailly is one of the most underrated defenders of his era. So many players were amazed by him

chillout2d ago

He is generally recognized as the player who mentored John Terry. And he wasn’t called ‘The Rock’ for nothing! He also helped bring George Weah to Chelsea.

freddie2d ago

My first every memory of football was Chelsea 8-0 vs Wigan on my birthday, and I remember thinking how amazing Malouda was (even tho he somehow didn’t score 😂) - so I have a soft spot for him and he gets my vote!

james.brooke2d ago

We almost signed him as well mate, wouldn’t pay Lyon the money and he ended up at Chelsea instead

chillout2d ago

A Liverpool fan going first to Chelsea ?
